Finding a Job in the Digital Age
By Blake Leong
Browsed LocaljobsHI.com and didn't find
that perfect job? In the old days (which doesn’t seem
that long ago), you’d just check the paper to see where the
jobs are.
If
there was a job to be had, chances are you could find it in
the classifieds.
But that’s not the comprehensive resource
it used to be.
More and more companies are taking their job postings
online.
The
paper is still great, but as an active job seeker, it is in
your best interest to check out all your options.
Here are a few of the great ways we know to find
killer jobs online.
Careerbuilder
They’re the big boys in town.
They are a huge national board with hundreds of
postings, and because they are tied to the Honolulu
Advertiser locally, they have a large bank of local jobs
that are fresh, current, and available.
Searching for jobs is easy.
You can do a basic search by typing in a keyword
(e.g. “banking”), or you can search by company or use an
advanced search to do a more focused search.
You can apply on-line for some jobs, or
contact the employer directly if contact information is
listed.
If you just want to see what’s out there,
Careerbuilder is a great way to take a “shotgun” approach.
Local Job Boards
HawaiiJobsOnDemand and Joblink8 are both
great local boards.
Where Careerbuilder has jobs nationally,
HawaiiJobsOnDemand and Joblink8 both specialize in jobs only
in Hawaii.
This
can be useful if you want to filter out some of the national
jobs that get through Careerbuilder’s Hawaii filter.
Company Websites
If you know what company you want to work
for already, the best place to go is directly to the
company’s website.
Many companies post their job opportunities
exclusively on their own website rather than post on any of
the other boards mentioned.
This means that you might find jobs on their website
that you wouldn’t find anywhere else!
The easiest way to find the website of a
company?
Try
going to www.google.com and searching for the company by
name.
A lot of
times it helps to add “Hawaii” to the search (e.g.
“Coca-cola Hawaii” instead of “Coca-cola”)
Other Great Online Resources
If you’re not already a member, you should
check out linkedin.
This website allows you to network professionally,
and many times, jobs are posted there by people looking to
hire someone they already know.
Indeed.com is sort of like a google for
job postings.
It
searches across multiple job boards and returns search
results to you based on your keywords.
A great time-saver if you know what you’re looking
for!
Jobster is another job search website.
The best thing about jobster is their free e-mail
alerts.
You can
enter your search criteria and set up an automatic daily
email alert that will send job search results directly to
your email!
Good luck, and happy job hunting!
